A coaching model for endodontic education combining coaching in the moment and coaching over time to raise student self-efficacy¶

Description¶
The article proposes a model in which a coaching approach enhances endodontic education 'by increasing their self‐efficacy and empowering students to take personal responsibility for their learning'. It operates on two timescales: coaching in the moment during clinical teaching sessions, and coaching over time in periodic development reviews away from the chairside. Both are structured around the GROW model and deliberately target Bandura's four sources of self-efficacy.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A relationship of absolute trust between coach and student, with clarified roles, expectations and goals
- An environment of psychological safety created for the coaching conversations
Constraints¶
- No published investigations specifically address the use of coaching in endodontics, and there are no recommended models; the model is a proposal, not a tested intervention
- Coaching over time has, as yet, only been reported in medicine, not dentistry
Target Learners¶
- Undergraduate and postgraduate endodontic students
Learning Goals¶
- Clinical skills acquisition and performance in endodontics
- Self-efficacy and personal responsibility for learning
