Collaborative Skills Network: mapping sentence openers to collaborative skills and subskills

Description

The Collaborative Skills Network was a conceptualization of collaborative skills, their subskills, and the sentence openers that signal them, grounded in Johnson and Johnson's collaborative learning framework. As the authors explain, 'Each sentence opener in a discussion was related to a particular CL skill (Communication, Trust, Leadership and Creative Conflict) or subskill (Openness for the Communication skill) as defined by Johnson and Johnson (1991).' Selecting the opener 'I think' indicated openness of the sending subskill of communication, letting the GL Tutor interpret which skill a student was using and compare it to the optimal skills defined in the network.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Sentence openers whose association with particular skills and subskills is predefined in the network, so the tutor can trace discussion through a finite state machine

Constraints

  • The network was operationalized through scripted, menu-driven sentence openers, a later-recognized insufficiency for identifying and guiding collaborative skills

Target Learners

  • students working collaboratively in networked group projects

Learning Goals

  • developing collaborative skills and subskills during group discussion
