Description

CFDE is an LMS-integrated discussion environment inspired by the wiki connection metaphor: significant concepts in content texts appear as dark, underlined links, and clicking a concept opens a discussion frame that slides from the right side of the same screen rather than moving students to a separate module. The article built the LMS with Adobe Flash and the discussion infrastructure with PHP-based Vbulletin on a Linux host. It was compared against a traditional threaded discussion environment over six weeks.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Content texts must mark concepts directly related to the subject and significant to learning the content as links, and significant concepts are also listed under the content text

Constraints

  • The study reports the environment as an independent module alternative to traditional hierarchical threaded discussions within LMSs; effectiveness evidence comes from one six-week university course

Target Learners

  • undergraduate education faculty students

Learning Goals

  • concept-focused discussion of course content in an online blended learning environment
