Description

Two novel controlled production instruments for eliciting Korean passive sentences. The syntactic-priming task presents a two-part picture; the examiner describes the prime and the participant produces a target sentence after hearing a primed passive. The sentence-completion task provides the nouns and verb on the picture, with the examiner initiating the first noun phrase. Both use humanized color symbols ("the Red," "the Blue," and "the Yellow") as arguments to control lexical-semantic influence, with 40 stimuli total (20 per task, 10 per canonicity condition).

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Responses are coded correct only when participants construct a passive with correct grammatical markers and verb inflection; using an active voice counts as an error

Constraints

  • Designed to focus only on syntactic features by minimizing semantic-lexical top-down processing, so they do not sample spontaneous or semantically rich production

Target Learners

  • adult Korean speakers, including elderly adults

Learning Goals

  • measuring passive-sentence production accuracy
  • isolating syntactic planning from lexical-semantic processing
