Description¶
The review developed an explanatory framework from content analysis of 17 studies, organizing six themes — enhanced learning, collaborative learning, deep learning, student engagement, student disengagement, and faculty engagement — into "an explanatory schema relating learning processes activated by creative project-based lessons and the effects on students and faculty" (Fig. 2, Table 2). It links student-created models and projects to self-directed learning, cognitive load modulation, and metacognitive behaviours, mediated by mentorship and group learning.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Creative project-based lessons require student autonomy in design and production, team-based work, and consistent engagement from team members or mentors
Constraints¶
- Challenges include high task demands, cognitive and emotional intensiveness, and mismatch with students' professional identities
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate medical students
Learning Goals¶
- preclinical and clinical medicine topics
- collaborative learning
- deep learning
Claims¶
- Six Themes Creative Project Based Learning Medical Education [+M]
- Student Disengagement Task Burden Creative Projects [~M]
