Description

A teacher dashboard prototype built on MathTutor digital traces for dyads collaborating on fraction assignments, developed through "a teacher co-design methodology" with 10 teachers. It shows a start screen of five dyads and six indicators - attempts needed, chance of trial-and-error behavior, fraction-skill proficiency, activity over time, amount of talk, and solved assignments - with group and class overviews. Three versions differing in support (mirroring, alerting, advising) were created from it for the experiment.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Displays information about cognitive and social aspects of collaboration
  • Presented with simulated, fictitious CSCL situations in the experimental test

Constraints

  • MathTutor does not yet track amount of talk; the study inferred talk from laptop-detected sound, which offered no information about what was said

Target Learners

  • Primary school teachers
  • Pre-service primary school teachers

Learning Goals

  • Monitoring dyads' cognitive and social collaboration on fraction assignments
