Description

The benchmark lesson is a classroom instructional unit that translates the laboratory CVS training procedure into a fourth-grade science lesson using the ramps materials. It consists of exploratory group experiments, about 20 minutes of whole-class expository instruction following five teacher steps (initiate reflective discussion on a bad comparison, model correct thinking, test understanding, reinforce correct thinking, summarize rationale), and application experiments. The authors "attempted to engineer a classroom learning environment (Brown, 1992) that students could refer to during future hands-on activities calling for the design of informative experiments."

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A regular classroom teacher to deliver the expository instruction; students work in groups of 3 to 5 with their own ramp materials and preformatted worksheets for recording setups and outcomes

Constraints

  • Only the ramps domain was used during classroom work (springs and sinking were used in interviews); the lesson is a one-time event focusing on a procedural skill rather than repeated cycles; the teacher did not provide corrective feedback on CVS during exploration or application phases

Target Learners

  • fourth-grade elementary school students

Learning Goals

  • designing unconfounded (controlled) experiments using the control of variables strategy
  • justifying and evaluating experimental designs
