Description

An experimental apparatus and procedure for studying latent inhibition in adult humans. Subjects attended to one ear of a dichotic tape recording, counting repetitions of paired nonsense syllables, while a white-noise CS was superimposed on one track. In the testing phase, subjects watched a scoreboard and pressed a button whenever they expected a point to be raised, aiming to bring their score down to zero. The criterion for learning was the number of CSs to termination of the experiment, and eye movements were monitored via a mirror to verify which ear was attended.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Subjects must attend to the designated ear during preexposure, verified by monitoring eye movements

Constraints

  • The experiment terminated either after five consecutive correct presses to the CS or after 31 presentations of the CS

Target Learners

  • undergraduate psychology students

Learning Goals

  • learning the rule connecting a white-noise CS to scoreboard point changes
