Description¶
The article proposes the concept of a chatbot-based digital tutor that acts as an intermediary among the three actors of large-scale lecture settings. It addresses three identified communication flaws through three mediated communications: students interact with the tutor in "simulated one-to-one tutoring settings based on the computers are social actors paradigm", teaching assistants get feedback about student progress, and lecturers get access to feedback about students' learning progress and state of knowledge. The concept targets long-term support across a whole lecture period rather than short-term chatbot use.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- The tutor must provide a natural language and social interaction interface (R1) and be available all the time on common student devices (DP2)
Constraints¶
- Designed for large-scale formal educational settings where one-to-one instruction cannot be achieved due to resource constraints such as the lack of lecturers and teaching assistants
Target Learners¶
- students in large-scale university lecture courses
Learning Goals¶
- individualized learning support and feedback during a full lecture period, including practicing content and formative assessment
