Description¶
The article's organizing design framework divides cognitive labor in AI-assisted writing: the system takes initiative only over domain discovery, where the Illusion of Explanatory Depth renders authors unable to act for themselves, while the author retains full initiative over narrative synthesis. The authors argue the cognitive work of transforming knowledge into one's own prose is itself the mechanism through which deeper understanding forms, grounding the framework in the knowledge-transforming model of written composition. They propose it generalizes to journalism and documentary filmmaking, with parameters such as cue aggressiveness and source traceability calibrated to each domain's epistemic conditions.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A domain where practitioners face blind spots they cannot self-diagnose and where voice, interpretation, and judgment constitute the output's core value
Constraints¶
- The authors state generalizing the split is not plug-and-play: a journalist on deadline has a narrower discovery window, and an academic in their own specialty faces a shallower IOED
Target Learners¶
- Creative writers and knowledge workers producing domain-specific work in unfamiliar domains
Learning Goals¶
- Knowledge-transforming: synthesizing unfamiliar specialized domain facts into authentic prose
