Description¶
The article implements discovery learning as group work on student worksheets, following the discovery process described as "orientation, generating hypotheses, testing hypotheses, making inferences and evaluation (control)". Students manipulate physical props such as origami and HVS paper to fold shapes, measure sides and angles, and induce relationships (e.g. triangle area as half a rectangle), while the teacher circulates to monitor and scaffold. Questions on the worksheets are designed to provoke analysis, analogy-finding, and generalization.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Worksheet questions must "stimulate students' thinking process optimally" and be answerable within students' reach so they do not fail or lose confidence
- Teacher performs didactic-pedagogical anticipation in the lesson plan, predicting student responses before teaching
Constraints¶
- At the first meeting group formation caused friction; some students initially refused to work with particular peers
- Low-ability students had difficulty understanding worksheet problems and could not resolve all worksheet items
Target Learners¶
- junior high school (grade VII) mathematics students
Learning Goals¶
- mathematical analogical ability
- geometry concepts (triangle, square, rectangle area and perimeter)
- generalization and pattern-finding
