Description¶
A Naval Training Devices Center technical report developed a color-code and symbol system for animated training panels indicating organizational and functional relationships among components and changes in physical state, such as fuel as it is burned. Ten colors were selected with federal specification numbers, and the symbols included diamonds, pyramids, dashes, squares, wavy line, straight line, large dots, and small dots. Codes were chosen from a literature study and laboratory-tested against selected backgrounds.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Codes were laboratory-tested against selected backgrounds before selection, using discrimination of Landolt broken rings in four positions against ten pre-selected background panels.
Constraints¶
- The system was developed for use on animated training panels in naval training devices, indicating relationships among components and changes in the physical state of matter.
Target Learners¶
- naval trainees using animated training panels
Learning Goals¶
- reading organizational and functional relationships among components and changes in physical state on training panels
