Description¶
The study is informed by two theoretical models. The Online Research and Comprehension Model frames online inquiry as five recursive, reciprocal processes: "specifying information need and locating, critically evaluating, synthesizing, and communicating online information". The Documents Model holds that "readers can construct two types of representations when reading multiple texts: an intertext model and an integrated mental model", with source-to-content and source-to-source links connecting source information to content and across documents. The intervention and its scoring rubrics were designed around these models, treating sourcing as applicable in every inquiry phase.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Sourcing instruction should be structured to follow the phases of online inquiry so that source information is attended to in each phase
Constraints¶
- The Documents Model was initially developed in the context of interpreting historical documents, and the article applies it to online health information
Target Learners¶
- upper secondary school students
Learning Goals¶
- sourcing during online inquiry
- critical evaluation of online information
- multiple document comprehension
