Description¶
The article validates a repeatable workflow in which donor MRI scans are reviewed by a radiologist and anatomist, uploaded to a web-based DICOM viewer, and paired with clinical, radiological, and pathological reports, anatomical correlations, 3D photogrammetric reconstructions, and segmented models (Figs. 1–3). The conclusion states: "This study validates a structured workflow for integrating donor-specific pathologies and XR technologies into a CBL framework." Unlike idealized digital models, it uses authentic anatomical variations derived directly from body donors to mirror real-world clinical complexity.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Permanent body donations with consent for medical imaging and three-dimensional reconstruction for educational purposes
- Collaborative radiologist-anatomist review of images before upload
- Defined learning objectives and case workflow per module
Constraints¶
- Only two abdominal cases with relatively rare conditions were included
- Restricted access to digital anatomical materials with usage disclaimers prohibiting unauthorized downloading or distribution
Target Learners¶
- First-year medical students in gross anatomy laboratories
Learning Goals¶
- Understanding anatomical variability relative to typical anatomy
- Connecting physical 3D structures with 2D radiologic counterparts
Claims¶
- Xr Cbl Cohort 2021 Significant Gains Retained [+M]
- Thematic analysis of open-ended feedback found students valued interactive 3D models, concise case presentation, and clinical context, while requesting labeled structures, step-by-step platform guidance, videos, technical fixes, and embedded quizzes [+W]
