Double-content examples as instructional support for video-based analysis in an ill-structured domain¶

Description¶
Double-content examples integrate two levels: the learning domain level (the skill being taught, here analyzing classroom videos) and the exemplifying domain level (the content illustrating it, here classroom management). In this study, written analyses by an expert teacher with 38 years of experience served as examples, with highlighted text sequences marking professional vision indicators and instructional explanations added. The framework draws on cognitive load theory and the worked example effect, proposing that novices study expert solutions before producing their own analyses.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Learners study the double-content examples before conducting their own video-based analyses
Constraints¶
- The study found the examples hindered some professional vision outcomes in this ill-structured domain, so the framework's benefit in teacher education is not supported by this study
Target Learners¶
- student teachers (pre-service elementary teachers)
Learning Goals¶
- professional vision of classroom management: noticing, reasoning, generating alternatives of action, and expert features
Claims¶
- Double Content Examples Hindered Noticing Reasoning [-M]
- Double Content Examples Hindered Applying Concepts [-M]
