Dual-process reasoning hazards framework with hazard-matched questioning strategies

Description

Dual-process theories describe reasoning as the interplay of a fast, automatic Process 1 producing a provisional mental model and a slow, effortful Process 2 that evaluates it. Physics education research maps four hazards along the reasoning path: intuition may supply an incorrect first model (A); a confident reasoner may accept it without scrutiny (B); analysis may be biased towards rationalising the initial answer (C); or the mindware may be insufficient to detect the error (D). The course matched each hazard to a questioning strategy from the ISLE framework: guiding questions for A and B, conflict between formula and known result for C, and falling-back questions for D.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Each hazard was explicitly matched to a strategy in the lesson preceding the simulation.

Constraints

  • Hazards are failure points of a process, not student types; reifying them as stable characters is a simplification.

Target Learners

  • prospective physics teachers
  • secondary-school physics students whose reasoning the teachers diagnose

Learning Goals

  • diagnosing student reasoning hazards
  • selecting questions matched to the hazard
