Description

The article frames digital storytelling as an educational technology that "establishes a meaningful and inclusive multimodal learning context" in which EFL students with different life experiences, sociocultural backgrounds and proficiencies negotiate concepts. Drawing on communities-of-practice theory, the authors argue the videomaking process encourages students to construct shared knowledge, gives them autonomy, and creates a context for collaboration, with DST serving as a tool for adapting prior beliefs about STEM-A to a video format. In this study the framework explains why video-producing groups showed the largest disciplinary literacy gains.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Students work in groups on videomaking tasks tied to inquiry-based astronomy content
  • Teachers should be ready to enter a community of practice with their students and co-construct disciplinary knowledge

Constraints

  • The mechanism account is the authors' interpretation of a small-sample case study; time spent on video production and group composition varied across groups

Target Learners

  • EFL students aged 10-16 learning STEM content in English

Learning Goals

  • Astronomy (STEM-A) disciplinary literacy in English
  • Conceptual understanding of Moon phases and the Solar System
