Description¶
Table 2 of the report describes three components of dual language program implementation: program leadership and support (a school leadership team of teachers and administrative staff overseeing model selection, development, and evaluation, with district or state training and funding); hiring and training linguistically and culturally competent teachers in both languages; and aligned curriculum, assessments, and instruction in both languages, including a scope and sequence aligned across subjects and grades in both languages.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Schools establish a school leadership team consisting of teachers and administrative staff responsible for selecting, advocating for, and overseeing the program model.
- Teachers must be trained on how students develop bilingualism and biliteracy and, especially for two-way programs, learn how to incorporate student cultural and linguistic backgrounds into instruction.
- Schools develop or adopt a scope and sequence and ensure alignment of the curriculum across subjects and grades in both languages.
Constraints¶
- Neither study provides specific information about the implementation of the school leadership team, and one study does not provide information on how the schools were supported.
Target Learners¶
- elementary and middle school students in one-way and two-way dual language programs
Learning Goals¶
- bilingualism and biliteracy
- academic language development across content areas
