Description¶
A four-lesson outdoor sequence on animal survival, plant survival, food chains and food webs. In each lesson students "accessed the school ground" to find animals or plants, then the teacher grouped them to discuss and construct classifications, food chains or food webs. Each lesson targets named SPS (observing, classifying, inferring, predicting, communicating, controlling variables) and named curiosity dimensions (novelty, lack of clarity, complexity of stimuli, surprise/bafflement).
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Students access the school ground to seek for and observe animals and plants
- Teacher grouping and discussion in the school compound after exploration
Constraints¶
- Designed for Year Five primary science topics on survival of species, food chains and food webs
Target Learners¶
- Year Five primary school students (mean age 11)
Learning Goals¶
- Science process skills: observing, classifying, making inferences, predicting, communicating, controlling variables
- Scientific curiosity dimensions: novelty, lack of clarity, complexity of stimuli, surprise/bafflement
Claims¶
