Description

A three-stage framework (Beginner, Journeyman, Expert) extending Bennett's Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity by focusing on the intercultural competencies that facilitate or moderate the development of intercultural sensitivity. Each stage pairs an attitude (e.g. "Conscious incompetence") with emotional, cognitive and behavioural goals, from observing and recognising emotions about another group's strange behaviours, through relating and experimenting, to adapting and belonging through empathy. MIXER's learning goals and evaluation measures were structured around the Beginner and Journeyman stages of this framework.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Learning activities must map emotional, cognitive and behavioural goals to the learner's stage, as MIXER does via its rule-set game scenario

Constraints

  • MIXER targets the Beginner and Journeyman stages for 9–11 year olds and does not attempt the Expert stage

Target Learners

  • 9–11 year old school children

Learning Goals

  • intercultural conflict competence
  • recognising emotions in intercultural encounters
  • understanding other groups' practices and values
