Description

The article proposes that embodied designs stage a coordination between an egocentric perspective, in which actions are experienced with respect to one's own body, and an allocentric perspective, in which objects are experienced with respect to other objects. Following Benally et al., it distinguishes "in perspectival substitution, one perspective replaces the other; in perspectival mutuality, individuals use an alternative perspective to validate their own; in perspectival synergy, a combination of two perspectives results in one that is greater than each perspective alone." The design operationalizes this as walking a body-scale number line (egocentric) then puppeteering a figurine on a desk-scale line (allocentric).

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Students must experience the egocentric enaction first and then be guided to coordinate it with the allocentric normative display

Constraints

  • Merely shifting unidirectionally from the BNL to a figurine on the SNL was often not enough, per the article's implications

Target Learners

  • middle-school students learning integer arithmetic

Learning Goals

  • understanding addition and subtraction with positive and negative integers
