Description

EDA is the article's central construct: a form of dynamic assessment, grounded in Vygotsky's zone of proximal development, in which mediation after each reading test deliberately targets learners' emotions. The authors describe DA as grounded in socio-cultural theory whereby "instruction leads development", and EDA adds emotional content: after each test the instructor gives elaborated feedback, poses guiding questions, encourages task involvement, and focuses attention on "the emotional aspects of the task" while presenting texts with an emotional theme. The study uses EDA to raise adolescent EFL learners' trait emotional intelligence as measured by the TEIQue-ASF.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Mediation sessions must follow a pretest-mediation-posttest DA cycle with repeated reading tests and post-test intervention
  • Reading passages for EDA must have an emotional theme, unlike the emotionally neutral texts used in comparison conditions

Constraints

  • The article notes the exact amount and type of intervention may have been more than EDA learners needed and less than DA learners needed, an imbalance that might have caused the score difference

Target Learners

  • Intermediate EFL learners aged 12-15

Learning Goals

  • Emotional intelligence (knowing, managing, and recognizing emotions, motivating oneself, handling relationships)
  • Reading comprehension in an L2
