Description

A 15-week compulsory EFL course at a Japanese university met weekly for 90 minutes; "During class, students were able to access approximately 500 graded English readers (a series of Oxford, Cambridge, Heinemann, and Penguin), and were encouraged to choose whichever books they wanted to read." The class split between administration/activities and free voluntary silent reading; students submitted a B5-size book report per book as the credit requirement and were graded on participation and amount read. Students read 649 pages (SD = 201), about 13 readers or 120,634 words, on average.
