Description¶
The article proposes an expanded teacher-facilitator model in which the four components of the online instructor role identified by Berge — pedagogical, social, organizational, and technical — are distributed between the online instructor and the on-site facilitator. The instructor teaches the course and follows the curriculum, while the social, organizational, and technical components are jointly managed through regular communication. This creates "a truly hybrid learning environment" linking the local classroom more closely with the online environment.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Each school must appoint an on-site facilitator to be present when students take the class each day
- Facilitators need basic web-based training before the course starts
Constraints¶
- The extent to which facilitators took responsibility for social, organizational, and technical areas depended on their own personal characteristics
Target Learners¶
- Rural high school students in small schools
Learning Goals¶
- Access to advanced courses such as AP English through online distance education
