Description

The article prescribes a two-phase repetition schedule for audio vocabulary lessons. In the first year, repetitions of each lesson are distributed in an expanding pattern: "seven repetitions within the first week; four repetitions in the second week, three in the third, two in the fourth week, and the rest – at any interval in time". In the second year, students repeat the target vocabulary once a month for four months to sustain long-term retention of words learned the previous year.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Audio lessons must be accessible on students' mobile phones so repetition can occur outside class
  • Students must be instructed to pronounce the words aloud while listening

Constraints

  • The schedule was tested with 120 topical words from one unit (homes and apartments) with Ukrainian B1-level university students

Target Learners

  • Second-year ESL university students majoring in English

Target Goals

  • Long-term retention of previously learned L2 vocabulary
