Explanation assisted REACT strategy: the REACT strategy extended with an explanation principle for context-based learning

Description

The REACT strategy teaches a topic related to daily-life contexts through five principles: "Relating", "Experiencing", "Applying", "Cooperating" and "Transferring". Prior studies found discussion and explanation parts were missing, so this study extends REACT by adding an explanation principle, used cyclically across all principles in lesson plans. Making explanation is said to help students replace unfruitful pre-existing ideas because students often cannot find new thinking ways without teachers' guidance.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A daily-life context related to the topic (e.g. the "Ice Rink" text)
  • Teacher explanations after activities and guided discussion environments
  • Lesson materials developed with physics education experts

Constraints

  • Some alternative conceptions were not eliminated even when stressed by the activities and experiments
  • Teachers' knowledge and skills in applying context-based learning in real classrooms were reported insufficient in prior studies

Target Learners

  • prospective science teachers (freshmen in Science Education)

Learning Goals

  • conceptual understanding of impulse, momentum and collisions
  • elimination of alternative conceptions
