Description¶
The article organizes its intervention around Fairclough's three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis, in which "CDA approach focuses on three dimensions of discourse": text, discourse practice, and socio-cultural practice. These dimensions are analyzed at three levels — description, interpretation, and explanation — and the model treats language as a form of social practice in which ideology is invested in linguistic features. The study operationalized the description level through the ten-question model and had students interpret and explain texts' ideological meanings.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- An experienced teacher familiar with CDA principles to guide interpretation and explanation stages
Constraints¶
- The article reports that interpretation and explanation stages "encountered many problems" because students had little acquaintance with macro-level CDA concepts
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate EFL English-major students (TEFL, Translation, Literature)
Learning Goals¶
- critical reading and analysis of implicit and ideological meanings in texts
- reading comprehension of ideologically loaded texts
