Description

The article describes the flipped classroom as "a blended learning model that inverts the traditional teaching process" in which knowledge delivery shifts to before class and classroom time is used for interaction, case discussion, and problem-solving. It explains the observed advantages through the "zone of proximal development" theory: lower-order cognitive processes occur before class and higher-order processes (analyzing, synthesizing, evaluating, creating) occur in class, "thereby achieving knowledge internalization and transfer". This is the framework the authors use to interpret their pooled results.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Students independently acquire content before class via activities such as watching instructional videos and reading literature

Constraints

  • The authors note it is difficult to fully account for variability arising from differences in teaching implementation even under a random-effects model

Target Learners

  • undergraduate medical and preventive medicine students in China

Learning Goals

  • theoretical knowledge in preventive medicine courses
  • self-directed learning
  • critical thinking
  • collaboration and problem-solving
