Description

An individual-level RCT, blocking on schools, in a social district of 7 cities in the province of Milan. Of 262 referred at-risk students, 131 were assigned to treatment (84 treated) and 131 to control. Randomization created equivalence on a large subset of observed variables; attrition rates were "negligible and balanced". Outcomes came from pre- and post-intervention questionnaires, school administrative data, and national standardized tests, with ITT and IV-based ATT estimates.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Pre-intervention measures used as covariates to gain statistical power, and blocking on schools

Constraints

  • Sample size was smaller than assumed in the original design due to only 262 referred students

Target Learners

  • 6th and 7th graders experiencing school problems

Learning Goals

  • student wellbeing in school
  • educational performance
