Description

A fiber crafts course facilitated within a weekly design studio at a K-8 public charter school, in which 16 middle school students aged 11-14 self-selected into units on weaving and fabric manipulation. Students wove personal designs on backstrap, rigid heddle, and tabletop looms, and sewed 3D shapes using a laser-cut template of a checkered matrix. Students planned designs on grid paper before implementing them, a tool drawn from the crafting community, and were not introduced to computing concepts in relation to crafts during the study.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Looms warped before sessions and a checkered matrix template for tracing dots onto fabric, so students could engage the matrix structures of both crafts.

Constraints

  • The course consisted of three units of two sessions apiece (1 h 10 min/session); this article focuses on the first two units, and students knew the research concerned fiber crafts and computing.

Target Learners

  • middle school students aged 11-14 in a K-8 public charter school

Learning Goals

  • performing computational concepts through personally meaningful craft projects
