Description¶
The treatment was a fifteen-week topic-based listening and speaking course "based on Cotterall's (2000) principles of autonomous learning". Six metacognitive strategies drawn from Oxford (1990) were taught at three levels: centering learning (overviewing, focusing attention), arranging and planning learning (identifying task purpose and planning), and evaluating learning (self-editing, self-evaluation). Tasks were linked to the recognition-to-production (PPP) model from Communicative Language Teaching and practiced under the study's three planning conditions.
