Description¶
A multi-phase assessment paradigm for children's metacognitive monitoring and control. Children "watched an educational film and predicted their test performance," then "solved a cloze test regarding the film content including answerable and unanswerable items and gave confidence judgments to every answer." Finally, "children withdrew answers that they believed to be incorrect," allowing monitoring accuracy and control behavior to be measured before and during test taking across answerable and unanswerable items.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- An educational film establishing the content to be tested
- A cloze test containing both answerable and unanswerable items
- Confidence judgments collected for every answer
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- Primary school children aged 9/10 and 11/12 years
Learning Goals¶
- Assessment of metacognitive monitoring and control processes during test taking
Claims¶
- Monitoring-based control (the relation between confidence judgments and maintenance decisions) is stronger for fourth graders than second graders and strengthens over time for open-ended questions [+W]
- Fourth graders monitor and control answers to open-ended questions more accurately than second graders, but no significant age difference was found for true-false questions [+W]
