Description¶
Each integrated lesson followed a five-phase model in which the instructional focus gradually shifted from music to mathematics. In phase one music was the focus; phases two through four progressively balanced and then privileged mathematics, and in phase five "music was not included and teachers focused only on mathematics topics". The article uses this structure to scaffold transfer from musical experiences to abstract mathematical content across the 14 intervention lessons.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teachers need preparation in music-mathematics integrated instruction; the music group teacher received 10 hours of professional development seminars before the intervention
Constraints¶
- The model was implemented by one trained teacher with prior experience of 15 pilot integrated lessons, which the authors note may not be accessible to other teachers
Target Learners¶
- third-grade elementary students
Learning Goals¶
- mathematics content achievement
- mathematics process ability (model, strategy, application)
