Description

The control intervention was a 12-lesson (6 multiplication, 6 division) program built on "principles of effective instruction", delivered by 18 trained Resource Room teachers to groups of 2-3 students. It comprised five structural components: review of prerequisite ACs, direct teaching through the three modes of knowledge representation, guided practice with reinforcement, independent practice with a success criterion of at least 16 correct oral answers to 20 written ACs in one minute, and final assessment with a progress table. Implementation fidelity was rated on a 4-point scale and showed high quality of application in all cases.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Teachers received 8 hours of training by the researchers plus weekly feedback on quality of program application

Constraints

  • The success criterion of at least 16 correct oral answers to 20 ACs in one minute applied to the independent-practice step

Target Learners

  • primary students with LD or MID, aged 9-12

Learning Goals

  • fluent and accurate recall of multiplication and division arithmetic combinations
