Description

A paired-task neuroimaging protocol combining a passive rapid event-related Spanish CV-syllable perception task (120 pairs varying in syllable consistency and similarity to Chinese, four runs of around 4 min) with a speech production imitation task (26 multi-syllabic Chinese pseudowords and 26 Spanish words, 156 trials), recorded with a 48-channel continuous-wave fNIRS system. The article uses it because "fNIRS is especially suitable for studying speech production, because of its relative tolerance with motion artifacts." Activation patterns from these tasks feed an SVM classifier that distinguishes RD from controls.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Participants must be native Chinese speakers who have not learned Spanish, so foreign-speech similarity to the native language can be controlled

Constraints

  • The article notes the relatively small sample size and cross-sectional design might have limited the capability of revealing developmental changes

Target Learners

  • Chinese children (fifth grade) and young adults with and without reading difficulty

Learning Goals

  • Foreign (Spanish) speech perception and production as behavioral and neural indices of phonological processing in reading difficulty
