Description

The study's core instrument is a booklet of four case vignettes describing a study group preparing for an exam, arranged in a 2 × 2 within-subjects design: no problems ("high knowledge and high learning motivation"), only motivational problems, only comprehension-related problems, and both problems ("low knowledge and low learning motivation"). After each vignette participants indicated at three social levels whether they would "do something to ensure a high quality of learning" and wrote down open-ended strategy answers. A soccer-team example vignette familiarized participants with the level distinctions.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Participants able to imagine being a member of the described study group and to distinguish the three social levels of regulation, supported by the example vignette

Constraints

  • The vignettes describe hypothetical rather than real group learning situations, and did not point to specific group members who might have more motivational or comprehension-related problems than others

Target Learners

  • university students in an introductory Educational Science lecture

Learning Goals

  • reporting conditional strategy knowledge for regulating motivational and comprehension-related problems at self, co and shared levels
