Description¶
The article integrates theories of embodied cognition with distributed and extended cognition to focus on four modalities for embodied collaboration in shared VR: actions on virtual objects, gesture, body movement, and speech. These modalities are the semiotic resources learners orchestrate simultaneously or in sequence to build shared geometric understanding. The framework treats the group, not the individual, as the interactional unit of analysis.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A shared VR environment in which multiple learners can simultaneously manipulate the same virtual object and see each other's avatars and actions in real time
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- in-service mathematics teachers
Learning Goals¶
- collaborative geometric reasoning and embodied mathematical knowledge construction
Claims¶
- Virtual objects in shared VR environments can serve as effective media for collaborative knowledge building among in-service teachers manipulating geometric shapes [+W]
- Body movements and positions focusing on virtual objects, and shifts away from or around them, signal key interactional collaborative events in shared VR [+W]
