Description

The researchers developed four short-term WebQuests — two for data analysis (DAW1 pickle-making, DAW2 used-car selection) and two for probability (PW1 Turkish lottery, PW2 traffic accidents) — each designed to take about 3 class hours (135 minutes) and containing "introduction, task, process, resources, evaluation, and conclusion". Tasks were tied to daily-life situations, included open-ended questions requiring higher-order thinking, and specified curated internet resources so students would not waste time searching. Students accessed them at http://www.MathWebQuests.com and solved them in groups in a computer laboratory.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Schools need computer laboratories, internet networks and computers with necessary hardware
  • Teachers and students need sufficient computer-use skills

Constraints

  • Teachers reported WebQuests on the internet are limited and inadequate and that preparing activities is difficult and time-consuming

Target Learners

  • ninth-grade students aged 15-16

Learning Goals
