Description¶
In the double-layered CoP model, "an online course itself is nurtured and developed into an internal CoP through four interdependent learning phases; i.e., course preparation, foundation building, interactive learning, and knowledge transfer". In parallel, each student develops an existing community in their teaching context into an external CoP through sequenced sub-tasks: community selection, membership development, knowledge sharing, and collaborative practice. Students write CoP journal entries reflecting on these experiences and connecting course ideas to practice.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Course preparation must explicitly explain the double-layered CoP structure and emphasize the value of learning in CoPs before the course starts
Constraints¶
- The external CoP development task is described as rather challenging and needs to be structured as small sub-tasks in a sequence
Target Learners¶
- in-service teachers and adult professionals in online higher education courses
Learning Goals¶
- linking course knowledge to professional practice and facilitating knowledge transfer between internal and external CoPs
