Description¶
The study adopts "the 4 pillars of NLP" theory from Revell and Norman (1997) as its organizing framework, categorizing four key elements: outcome, rapport (maximizing similarities and minimizing differences among learners), sensory awareness (observing peers' reading techniques), and flexibility (moving between reading strategies until the desired outcome is achieved). The researcher operationalized these pillars in ten sessions of ESP reading tasks, making the task objective clear, conducting reading cooperatively, and briefing learners to switch strategies when a strategy proved ineffective.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Reading tasks must state the main objective (outcome) clearly
- Tasks are conducted cooperatively to maximize similarities between learners
- Learners observe peers' reading techniques as possible approaches
- Learners are briefed to be flexible and move between strategies until the desired outcome is achieved
Constraints¶
- Operationalized here only for ESP reading comprehension with Iranian undergraduate medical-science learners
Target Learners¶
- Iranian undergraduate EFL learners in ESP courses
Learning Goals¶
- ESP reading comprehension
- strategy flexibility in reading
