Description¶
An instructional intervention in which third-grade children received instruction in the control of variables strategy (CVS) under one of four orderings of guidance: "high followed by high (HH), high followed by low (HL), low followed by high (LH), and low followed by low (LL)". High guidance combined direct instruction with inquiry questions, while low guidance used only inquiry questions. The design allowed timing of guidance to be isolated as the manipulated factor.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Instruction in CVS delivered via the two guidance types: high guidance combining direct instruction and inquiry questions, low guidance using only inquiry questions
Constraints¶
- Studied with third-grade children learning simple experimental design procedures and concepts (CVS)
Target Learners¶
- third-grade children
Learning Goals¶
- acquisition of the control of variables strategy (CVS) for designing experiments
- long-term transfer of experimentation skills
