Description

The article describes the worked-example approach as a procedure that "usually involves four stages" of cognitive skill acquisition. In Stage 1 learners receive instructional explanations communicating basic knowledge of principles and concepts; in Stage 2 they study worked examples with self-explanation prompts; in Stage 3 they turn to initial problem-solving, which deepens understanding and can serve self-assessment; in Stage 4 they practice extensively to enhance problem-solving speed and accuracy. The first three stages correspond to the early and intermediate phases of skill acquisition, focused on understanding the rationale of solutions, while Stage 4 corresponds to the late phase focused on efficiency. The present study targets the transition out of Stage 3, where accurate self-assessment decides whether learners restudy examples or proceed.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Learners navigating the sequence in a self-regulated manner must accurately self-assess their level of understanding after initial problem-solving to decide whether to proceed to Stage 4.

Constraints

  • The article states it is generally unclear how many problems learners need to solve at what times to effectively consolidate the acquired schemata in Stage 4.

Target Learners

  • learners acquiring cognitive skills through example-based learning, such as university students learning mathematical urn model problems

Learning Goals

  • understanding the rationale of solution procedures
  • enhancing speed and accuracy of problem-solving
