Four-task model of summer intervention: planning, financing, logistics/information, and anticipatory socialization

Description

Figure 2 presents a model specifying the content of summer melt interventions, showing four major kinds of tasks required of college-intending graduates: postsecondary planning, financing, logistics/information, and anticipatory socialization. The model indicates interrelations among requirements: financing obstacles force students back into planning decisions, and informational barriers within logistics can likewise send students back to financing tasks. Very few low-income participants reached the anticipatory socialization level that higher-income students typically occupy.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Intervention content must address interrelated clusters of financial, logistical, and socialization tasks rather than any single task type

Constraints

  • Supports that help students actualize admission might have limited relevance to increasing their capacity to succeed academically once enrolled

Target Learners

  • college-intending low-income high school graduates

Learning Goals

  • completing pre-enrollment tasks and making an optimal transition into college
