Description¶
The article integrates prior work into "four main categories, including advance organizer, concept map, scaffolding, and problem-solving strategies" for designing web-based metacognitive training. Advance organizers, drawn from Meaningful Learning Theory, help students integrate new knowledge with existing superordinate concepts; concept maps visualize relationships among concepts; scaffolding includes prompts, checklists, and procedural questions; and problem-solving strategies such as the IMPROVE method train students to raise metacognitive questions. The authors applied these categories in designing their website's four sections.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Instructors should investigate students' prerequisite knowledge first and design materials based on it, since meaningful learning occurs only when instructions comply with students' competencies and experiences
Constraints¶
- The authors note they applied only a portion of the design principles and did not further investigate applications of these principles
Target Learners¶
- college students in higher education
Learning Goals¶
- metacognitive skills: planning, monitoring, modifying, and evaluating learning
