Description¶
An intelligent tutoring system for fractions served as the core learning environment in this study, deployed with "382 4th and 5th grade students" across three conditions: a combined condition and "individual or collaborative-only learning conditions." The ITS logged process data on students' hints and errors over time, which the authors analyzed to compare conditions, and the activity supported reported situational interest measures.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- The ITS must support both individual and collaborative use so that conditions can be compared on the same content.
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- 4th and 5th grade students
Learning Goals¶
- fraction problem-solving
Claims¶
- 4th and 5th grade students learning fractions with an ITS show significant learning gains in individual, collaborative, and combined conditions [+W]
- The combined condition had higher learning gains than individual-only and collaborative-only conditions, but only among 4th grade students [+W]
- Students who collaborated (in collaborative and combined conditions) reported higher situational interest in the fractions activity [+W]
