Description¶
The stimulation apparatus is a battery-driven constant-current generator connected to a passive 4 × 1 HD-tDCS distributor delivering alternating current via five small circular electrodes in a ring montage, which "can stimulate the target region more intensively than the classical bipolar electrode montage." For the frontal theta group the central electrode was Fz, chosen for the implicated role of midline frontal theta in memory; ring electrodes were AF4, AF3, FC2, and FC1. Stimulation was 3 Hz at 1.5 mA peak-to-peak for 20 min, with 30-s ramps; sham used ramp-up/ramp-down only to preserve blinding.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Conductive gel applied under electrodes with impedance kept under 1 quality unit per electrode to maintain contact quality
Constraints¶
- Current-flow modeling estimated relatively low electric field changes (0.12 mV/mm frontal, 0.28 mV/mm parietal), lower than intensities usually required to induce neural entrainment (~0.3–0.4 mV/mm)
Target Learners¶
- adult undergraduate students
Learning Goals¶
- episodic memory for studied object pictures
