Description

A 3-4-week course module on GenAI in education within an undergraduate course, Technology and the Global Society. Students received curated resources (readings, videos, reports, policies), used GenAI to brainstorm policy ideas, wrote an individual policy detailing at least five justified elements, then joined a group discussion of 4-6 peers lasting approximately 45 minutes to develop a collective policy, followed by written reflection. "The module culminated in a group discussion, with prior activities designed to prepare students for it." Each policy element needed to be justified with evidence.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Curated starter resources provided in the first week
  • Individual writing assignment with feedback before group discussion
  • Reflection debrief and written assignment after discussion

Constraints

  • The module assumed students would have access to GenAI tools; the activity was both a graded assignment and a source of research data, a dual role the authors note may have influenced student responses

Target Learners

  • junior and senior undergraduate information technology and cybersecurity students

Learning Goals

  • understanding how GenAI functions
  • ethical and policy reasoning about AI use
  • multi-stakeholder policy design
