Description¶
The article grounds its creative writing unit in Finke et al.'s dual-process Geneplore model, in which "Generative and exploratory processes alternate continuously", mapped onto writing as alternation between the fictionworld (generative) and the writingrealm (explorative), following Csikszentmihalyi and Doyle. For instructional conditions it uses Schacter et al.'s Creative Teaching Framework: "Schacter et al. identified five areas that increase the likelihood of creative outcomes" — explicit teaching of creative thinking strategies, choice and discovery, intrinsic motivation, a creativity-conducive environment, and imagination and fantasy. These are restructured into a nested design of learning content embedded in learning mode and conditions.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Creative thinking strategies must be taught explicitly and be domain-specific, aligned to the task at hand, since divergent-thinking training alone did not transfer to unaligned genres in prior work the article cites (Baer)
Constraints¶
- The framework is applied to little-c creativity in fictional short-story writing in upper secondary education; Press (environmental contribution) was excluded
Target Learners¶
- Grade 10 pre-university secondary students (15-16 years)
Learning Goals¶
- Creative (fictional story) writing quality
- Divergent thinking
- Writing flow/speed
