Detailed lesson scripts capturing expert teachers' instructional decision-making¶

Description¶
For each objective, an expert Russian teacher writes a detailed script describing how they would present it, including material presented to students plus bracketed instructions for which questions to ask and how to respond to different answers. An early failure led to redesign: initial textbook-style Theory content involved little student activity, so the system was changed to ask students questions on every screen, or roughly every half minute. Curriculum developers then revise scripts for cultural fit while a lead teacher reviews to ensure the mathematical and pedagogical structure is preserved.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Expert teacher authors, translation to English, curriculum developer revision, and lead-teacher review
- Scripts must preserve the mathematical and pedagogical structure through revision
Constraints¶
- The level of detail of the scripts varies considerably from teacher to teacher, especially in the degree of interactivity
Target Learners¶
- Grades 2–6 students studying mathematics through Genie 2
Learning Goals¶
- Delivery of content-specific expert teaching practices, including questioning, explanations, and misconception handling
