Description

The article presents the genre-based approach as derived from systemic functional linguistics, "concerned with the relationship between language and its functions in social settings" (Hyon, 1996, p. 696, as cited). Learning different genres is the means of language acquisition for understanding communicative purposes and linguistic features. Callaghen and Rothery (1988) developed the teaching and learning cycle with three phases: modeling (explicit teaching of lexico-grammatical and rhetorical patterns), joint negotiation of text (combining background knowledge with genre structure to compose new text with teacher guidance), and independent construction (learners draw on learnt structures to write their own text, encouraging self-learning and collaborative skills).
